Social and Emotional Learning
On December 2, 2014, the BPS Board of Education passed a resolution to adopt new social and emotional learning standards for grades K-12. These comprehensive standards were selected after a thorough review by a district Curriculum Action Team made up of over 30 staff members from every level, including counselors, classroom teachers, physical education teachers, representatives from the Character Education Liaison Committee, and administrators.† †††††††††
The Curriculum Action Team researched standards from across the nation and selected standards from the State of Kansas, with their permission, called the Kansas Social, Emotional, and Character Development Standards. These comprehensive standards will help support recommendations from the Superintendentís School Safety Report (2013) and the BPS Strategic Plan (2014-2018). Social and emotional learning standards provide students with character, social, and personal development skills that are necessary to be successful in both life and school. Work groups made up of grade level teachers and counselors will meet to select resources and plan professional development that will help staff implement these new standards.
